Audience
The actors and audience members of Kabuki commonly interacted with things like clapping and chanting. The actors usually told the audience what to do. It was common for the audience members to yell out favorite actors during the performance. This is known as kakagoe. Kabuki usually took place over a long period of time, usually morning until evening. Spectators often attended for a single scene which resulted in constant coming and going in the theater. Food was served to audience during mealtimes. The audience was fenced in by 3 stages. Two hanamichi (elevated bridges from stage to auditorium back) were used so actors could constantly intrude on the audience. Men sometimes got very out of control when there were women prostitutes performing.
